Artisanal Stone Retreat
Location: Oakland Hills, CA
Design Goals:
Approach installation in two phases with hardscaping stone walls, pathways, and dry creeks first and soft scaping with plants irrigation and mulch second
Create an artistic, drought-adapted garden
Ensure habitat is low-maintenance California chaparral and Southwest desert
Plant on a rocky, Western-facing slope and include exotic cacti
Integrate minimal irrigation for plant establishment + success
Incorporate decorative gravel mulch for water sequestration, weed suppression, and dry desert aesthetic
A sloped backyard in the Oakland Hills becomes a stunning, multi-level artisanal retreat that maximizes space and skyline western views. Low-maintenance plantscapes create a native Californian chaparral habitat that’s naturally drought-tolerant, low-maintenance, and pollinator friendly. Seasonal dry creeks meander throughout the garden, and dry set, water-permeable stonework helps retain soil and sequester water, allowing pollinator plants and other life to thrive.
Starting at top of the hill, wander through the gently sloping pathways rimmed with cacti and colorful pollinators galore, including California native artemisias, salvias, and ceanothus, as well as yuccas, succulents, and agaves. Multiple pathways include options for stairs or an ADA-sloped ramp to provide inclusive accessibility for all guests to enjoy. Carefully crafted stone seating walls accented with slanted dry-stack stonework create a multitude of tranquil options to pause, connect with nature, and enjoy all the garden offers. End at the bottom of the backyard in a large open patio to take in the breathtaking views on the landing, perfect for quiet reflection or gathering with loved ones to watch the sun rise and set on the bay.
