Earth Paintings
Earth paintings are temporary works of art that illuminate the spirits, creatures, and natural cycles of the land they canvas. Created on open fields, hillsides, and other large open spaces, these works awaken our imagination by calling forth awareness of nature and paying homage to the seen and unforeseen forces of the landscape.
Ecologically minded materials
All of our “paint” is created with eco-beneficial, biodegradable materials. Depending on the needs and goals of the project, we can use a variety of mediums:
Minerals and clay, including calcium carbonate, iron oxide, ochres, and kaolin clay
Biochar, compost tea, or seeds that flower as the painting fades
Compost, mulch, or other natural site materials
The benefits of the earth as a canvas
More than just beautiful works of art, earth paintings deposit minerals to help neutralize soil acidity and add much-needed calcium to Sonoma County soils. Temporary, earth-based art is also a way to invite others to connect to the present moment and build an appreciation for the intricate webs of life. If the project is collaborative, it can also bridge mindfulness with team building and act as a catalyst to create a deeper connection between those who create the art and the land.
