Rustic Modern Farmhouse
Location: Sebastopol, CA
Design Goals:
Design an artistic, drought-adapted, and low-maintenance garden
Integrate the surrounding Laguna ecosystem
Create an open area for entertaining
Create a Modern Rustic Farmhouse Ranch aesthetic
Over 15,000 square feet of North Bay estate become an artistic, low-maintenance sanctuary that integrates seamlessly into the surrounding laguna ecosystem. Near the main buildings, drought-tolerant habitat plantings include colorful, native chaparral pollinators and grasses, with sound-screening shrubs on the periphery for privacy. The design includes thought to fire resistance: clustering plants into groups for fire breaks, surrounding the house in decorative gravel as mulch, and choosing fire-wise plants.
In the garden, bees, hummingbirds, and other life find a home among the bright pinks, pops of purple, and neutral greens—with plants including large muhlenbergia deer grasses, sticky monkey bush, California fuschia, purple verbenas, and copper buckwheats. Fun whimsical accents were added to the planting beds, including the clients’ sculptural artworks, decorative spiral stone designs, and hanging lanterns. A large mature olive tree, surrounded by California decorative gravel and artfully laid stone, provides shade and a grounding presence. A decomposed granite patio creates an open space for large event entertaining, with an above-ground fire pit primed for memories to be made late into the evening. Further out, the garden blends into the property’s wetland, where birch and oak trees dot the grassy meadow.
